What are Kobudo Kama?
Per our Instructional Partner (National Karate Kobudo Federation) the Kama were used as farming tools that were brought to Ryukyu Islands from trade with China in the 14th century. China had brought over the invention of organized irrigated farming and introduced cash crops, sugar cane and rice in addition to other products into the primarily fishing and gathering villages.
The Kama or Sickle, was used for weeding, grass cutting, rice stalk harvesting and sugar cane trimming as well.
During several periods of war in the Ryukyu islands, among rival clans and against invaders the Kama were seen on the battlefield. The bladed hand held weapons were used in pairs, and could hook opponents attacks to disarm them as well as make devastating slicing and tearing attacks on the offensive.
The Kama are still used as a grass scythe today and are sold in most rural hardware stores in a variety of styles and sizes.
The Hozon Shinko Kai, headed by Kaicho Akamine Hiroshi practice several Kama Kata including Kanegawa no Nicho Gama, Toyama No Nicho Gama, Suruchin Nicho Gama, and more.
How To Use The Kama
The Kama can be a difficult weapon to learn, however Instagram influencer and Karate creator Colton Woodard @theamericansamurai has instructional videos on his feed to learn from as well as a full Karate Kobudo Youtube Channel with Kama Kihon and Kata.
